Tech Squad

BAiP’s Tech Squad is a group of neighbors willing and able to help other neighbors with minor household repairs, computer tasks, or Zoom training. Because we cannot gauge the volume of requests in advance nor the availability of our Tech Squad volunteers, requests go into a queue. Members are informed whether a volunteer is available to assist.

If you are a BAiP member and you require the assistance of one of our Tech Squad volunteers, please email techsquad@bloominplace.org or call 212-842-8831 ext. 26 and leave a message so that a volunteer can return your call.  This service is for members only.

A sampling of the things our Tech Squad can do to assist with computers and related devices such as tablets and smartphones:
  • Help you learn to use Zoom (see below)
  • Set up an email or Skype account and provide basic instruction
  • Troubleshoot software or hardware
  • Install computer components (e.g. modems, printers, etc.) or load software
A sampling of the things our Tech Squad can do to assist with other household tasks:
  • Hang pictures
  • Fix a lamp or a clock
  • Repair door hardware
  • Change a lightbulb or a refrigerator filter
  • Install a cable box

Zoom Training and Resources

The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated a pause of in-person activities and, where possible, a switch to remote volunteer-led activities using Zoom. During the pandemic, many members have been able to learn to use Zoom to participate in activities and to socialize with neighbors while remaining appropriately distanced.

Because remote programming will continue for the near future, we have members who are willing to train other members in Zoom.

First, the following free resources can help you develop expertise in this tool.

Zoom’s Help Center is a great place to start. Zoom offers:
  • Video tutorials
  • Quick start guides
  • Live training (attend training for Zoom Meetings; BAiP does not currently use Zoom’s Webinar capability)

Senior Planet is another good resource:
  • Zoom training: live training with course handouts

DOROT also has resources:
  • Instructional guides for computer and mobile device users

Neighbor-to-Neighbor Trainings on Zoom

Once you've explored the resources above, keep in mind that BAiP's Tech Squad volunteers can help, too. We have group and private lessons tailored to how Zoom is used in BAiP groups and events. These lessons are volunteer-run, by members for members.

(Not yet a member? Membership is free to eligible neighbors. Visit our
membership page for how to join.)
